RECE

16 MAY 1940

O, O. REGY

GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONG KONG.

3rd May, 1940.

1. 53827/40

In accordance with Colonial Regulation No.

265, I have the honour to request your covering approval

of additional expenditure of the sum of $16,500 under

Head 30, Public Works Extraordinary, Buildings, Sub-head 5, Central Government Store, on page 124 of the printed

estimates for 1940-41.

2.

In this connection I would invite reference

to my despatch No. 159 of 2nd April, 1940, in which I

sought your approval of a re-vote of $34,247, representing

the unexpended balance of funds provided in 1939, which

in addition to the $6,000 provided in the printed

estimates for 1940-41 was intended to cover the completion

of the buildings.

3.

Further expenditure is now necessary in consequence of a decision to transfer certain stores

on charge of the Medical Department, whose present

accommodation in the former Seamen's Institute at

Johnston Road is both inadequate and unsuitable, to

the new Central Government Store. As the enclosed

storage accommodation at the Store is already filled

to capacity it is necessary to enclose more space at

an estimated cost of $15,500. A further sum of $1,000

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

MALCOLM MACDONALD, M.P.,
